On the mainstage of VERGE 19, Joel Makower discuss energy efficiency with Amory Lovins, Cofounder and Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute. Energy efficiency, a bigger energy “source” than oil, avoids at least twice as much global greenhouse gas emissions as renewables’ remarkable growth. Yet its potential is far larger. Designing buildings, vehicles, and factories as whole systems can save many times more energy than previously thought, and often at lower cost.

In a talk that draws on her new book The Optimist’s Telescope, Bina Venkataraman, the Director of Global Policy Initiatives at the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, illuminates our untapped power to think longer term.

On a panel moderated by Tara O’Shea (Planet), Rebecca Moore (Google) and Carlos Souza (Imazon) converse about NextGenMap’s ability to revolutionize our abilities to monitor forests. Historically, monitoring forests and land-use change has involved a compromise between the resolution and frequency of available satellite images and limited computing capacity for analysis. Recent developments in satellite imagery, machine learning and land use classification offer new opportunities to disrupt these limitations.

Andrew Zolli, VP of Global Impact Initiatives of Planet, takes on the VERGE 19 main stage to discuss new generations of Earth-observing satellites that are imaging the whole Earth, every day, in high-resolution.
